PF not deducted for years? Find out what happens to the money and interest in your account
Salaried individuals should periodically check their EPF passbooks. If contributions are not deposited, both the PF balance and the interest earned can be affected. Therefore, it is essential to review the records of both employee and employer contributions.
If you are a salaried employee and PF contributions are deducted from your salary every month, keeping an eye on your EPF account is crucial. Often, employees continue working without checking their PF passbooks for long periods, only to discover later that, for some reason, regular contributions were not deposited into their PF accounts. Such instances can directly impact your PF balance and the interest accrued in the future.
What happens if PF money is not deposited?
If the PF contribution for a particular month is not deposited into your account, that month's amount will not reflect in your EPF balance. Consequently, the interest that would have been earned on that amount will not be added either. In other words, the total amount credited to your account will fall short of what it should have been.
For example, suppose you worked at a company for seven years but PF contributions were deposited for only four years. The amount corresponding to the remaining three years will not be included in your PF balance unless those contributions are properly deposited or recovered.
What to do if PF is deducted from your salary but not credited to your account?
You may have noticed instances where PF money is deducted from your salary but not deposited into the EPF account on time. Instead of ignoring this, you should first check your EPF passbook to verify whether the monthly contributions have been deposited.
If the PF amount does not appear in the passbook, make a note of the details and inform your HR or the relevant department immediately. Additionally, cross-check the deduction amount against your salary slip and, if necessary, ask HR or the concerned department for the reason. You can also file a complaint through the EPFO.
