Petrol-Diesel Prices Today (June 25): Petrol and diesel prices are witnessing continuous fluctuations due to ongoing conflict in Iran and rising tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. In a press release issued on June 23 regarding the Ethanol Blending Programme (EBP), the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas stated that the process of blending ethanol with petrol is scientifically proven and does not adversely affect vehicle engines.

The Ministry stated, "The Government of India has observed certain misleading and baseless claims on social media regarding ethanol-blended petrol (EBP), which appear intended to confuse and mislead the public. It has also been noted that old photos and videos are being reshared in an attempt to garner views through sensationalism and create unnecessary anxiety regarding ethanol-blended fuel."

Why is ethanol blending important?

At a time when petrol prices in the country have crossed the ₹100-per-litre mark, ethanol blending significantly reduces India's dependence on crude oil imports. This will help keep fuel prices under control in the future.

Furthermore, since ethanol is an eco-friendly fuel, blending it with petrol leads to a substantial reduction in carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions from vehicles. Additionally, as ethanol is primarily produced from sugarcane juice and damaged grains, its increased use boosts the income of the country's farmers. In light of all this, the government has set a target of 20% ethanol blending (E20) across the country.
