Petrol-Diesel Prices Today: Petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged today as well. This pause in retail fuel prices comes amidst heightened political sensitivity surrounding fuel costs.

Petrol-Diesel Prices Today on May 6: On Wednesday, May 6, no changes were observed in petrol and diesel prices across the country. This stagnation in retail fuel rates occurs against the backdrop of increased political sensitivity regarding fuel pricing. While prices remain stable due to fluctuations in global crude oil markets, there has been no immediate change in petrol and diesel rates in major cities.

Prices Updated Every Morning

India's three major Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs)—Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL)—revise fuel prices daily at 6:00 AM under the 'Dynamic Fuel Pricing' mechanism. This revision is based on changes in international crude oil prices and the exchange rate of the Indian Rupee against the US Dollar. This system ensures that consumers directly and immediately benefit from fluctuations in the global oil market.

Difficult to Keep Prices Subdued for Long

The policy think tank 'Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations' (ICRIER) stated in a report that if fuel prices (petrol, diesel, and LPG) are not increased, it will place a significant burden on the exchequer. Furthermore, if crude oil prices remain elevated due to the crisis in West Asia, it will become difficult to sustain current price levels for an extended period. The think tank has suggested that the burden of price increases be passed on to consumers gradually.

The report further added, "Given India's heavy reliance on imported energy, maintaining current petroleum price levels is becoming increasingly difficult." "The fiscal cost of maintaining this current policy amounts to at least 0.6 percent of GDP annually; this diverts limited budgetary resources away from development priorities, and if financed through borrowing, it will also lead to an increase in public debt. Furthermore, this policy is regressive, as the primary beneficiaries of petroleum subsidies—particularly those who consume petrol—are often high-income households."
