Will Prices Rise Further?
On Thursday, the government dismissed reports claiming a potential hike in petrol and diesel prices, terming such speculation as "misleading."
Specifically, a report by Kotak Institutional Equities had warned of impending price hikes; following this, reports began circulating suggesting that petrol and diesel prices could surge by ₹25–28 per liter in the near future. It was reported that high crude oil prices are exerting continuous pressure on refiners.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas stated that no proposal to increase retail fuel prices is currently under consideration. While some news reports have suggested a hike in petrol and diesel prices, the government is not currently contemplating any such move.
Rising Concerns Over Fuel Prices
In recent days, global crude oil prices have remained highly volatile due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States in the Middle East. This crisis has heightened concerns regarding potential disruptions to oil shipments passing through the Strait of Hormuz. This is a critical route for energy shipments, through which approximately 20% of the global oil supply passes.
