What factors determine fuel prices?

Crude Oil Prices:
Petrol and diesel are primarily produced from crude oil. When international crude oil prices rise, it has a direct impact on the Indian market.

Rupee vs. Dollar:
India imports the majority of its crude oil, which is purchased in US dollars. If the rupee weakens, fuel becomes more expensive.

Government Taxes and Levies:
Central and state governments impose significant taxes on petrol and diesel, which account for a large portion of the retail price. This is the reason why fuel prices vary across different states.

Refining Costs:
The process of making crude oil usable—known as refining—also incurs costs. These costs depend on the quality of the crude oil and the capacity of the refinery.

Supply and Demand Balance:
If the demand for fuel in the market increases, prices tend to rise. Fuel consumption is typically higher during festivals, as well as during the summer or winter seasons.
