Petrol and Diesel Prices Rise: Now, Everything from Blinkit, Zomato, and Swiggy to Ola and Uber Will Become More Expensive..
Fuel Price Hike in India: If you order daily essentials via Blinkit or rely on Ola and Uber for your office commute, you should now be prepared to spend a little extra. The rise in petrol and diesel prices could have a direct impact on these app-based services. Since these companies' operations are entirely dependent on fuel, their operating costs will inevitably rise; this increased expenditure will, in turn, be passed on to the customers. Simply put, you may now have to pay more than before for every delivery, cab ride, or similar service. This means the financial strain caused by rising fuel prices will gradually become evident in your wallet and monthly budget.
**Ola-Uber Rides to Get Pricier**
Let's start with Ola and Uber. Until now, you typically had to pay higher fares for Ola and Uber rides only during peak hours. However, the situation is set to change. Due to rising petrol and diesel prices—combined with increasing commissions charged by the companies—drivers' earnings are dwindling. Consequently, the companies are now preparing to hike their base fares. Moving forward, you may have to pay 10–15% more in fares, not just during peak hours, but during normal hours as well. This means a ride that previously cost ₹200 could now set you back anywhere between ₹220 and ₹230.
**Zomato and Swiggy: Weekend Meals to Cost More**
The impact of rising petrol prices is also likely to be felt on food delivery apps like Zomato and Swiggy. Their delivery partners spend their entire day consuming petrol to deliver food right to your doorstep. However, the rising cost of fuel is now eating into their earnings. To retain their delivery partners, these companies are now considering paying them higher rates based on the distance covered. The direct implication of this, however, is that this increased operational cost will ultimately be borne by the customers. In other words, you may soon have to pay higher amounts in the form of delivery charges or handling fees, making your favorite weekend meals a little more expensive.
**Will Free Delivery Now Come to an End?**
Ordering groceries and goods through apps like Blinkit, Zepto, and Instamart could now become more expensive. While these companies currently offer low-cost or free delivery even on small orders, their operational costs are set to rise due to soaring petrol prices. Consequently, these companies may revise their free delivery policies. This implies that to qualify for free delivery, you may need to place larger orders. For instance, an order worth ₹499 might now be required to avail free delivery—a benefit previously available on orders as low as ₹299. If you place a small order, you may have to pay higher delivery charges. In other words, ordering items for minor, everyday needs could now prove more costly than before.
What is the Company's Plan B?
To navigate this complex challenge posed by high petrol and diesel prices, these companies are not simply sitting idly by. As a long-term solution, companies such as Zomato, Swiggy, Ola, and Blinkit are investing heavily in electric vehicle (EV) platforms. The companies aim to convert a significant portion of their delivery fleets to electric vehicles over the next few years, thereby completely insulating themselves from the volatility of petrol and diesel prices. However, since it will take some time for the necessary EV infrastructure to be fully established, the burden of these rising costs may, in the interim, have to be borne by the customers.
