Sarthak-PDS Scheme: The Central Government has decided to spend ₹25,530 crore to modernize the ration distribution system under the ‘Sarthak-PDS’ scheme, a move that will benefit 80 crore beneficiaries across the country.
Sarthak-PDS Scheme: A major decision regarding the ration distribution system was taken during a Union Cabinet meeting chaired by PM Narendra Modi. The government has announced the launch of the ‘Sarthak-PDS’ scheme to further improve and modernize the Public Distribution System (PDS). Approximately ₹25,530 crore will be spent on this scheme. This will directly benefit nearly 80 crore ration beneficiaries across the country.
3 Major Changes to the PDS Scheme
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that, under this new scheme, three major changes will be introduced to the ration distribution system:
1. Financial Assistance for States
The government will now provide financial assistance to state governments for transporting food grains. Currently, states incur significant costs in transporting food grains from FCI warehouses to districts, blocks, and ration shops. Under the new scheme, the Central Government will assist in covering these costs.
2. Ration Dealers' Commission to Increase
The government has acceded to a long-standing demand made by ration dealers. The commission paid to ration shopkeepers will now be increased, leading to a rise in their income.
3. Use of Technology and AI
Additionally, the government will utilize new technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to make the ration distribution system digital and transparent. Beneficiary registration will now be conducted through an AI-based system, which will help curb fraud and expedite the process.
Discussion on Tackling Heatwaves
It is worth noting that the Cabinet meeting also included discussions regarding the rising temperatures and heatwave conditions prevailing across the country. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that all ministries have been directed to take necessary measures to provide relief to the public. He added that the Ministry of Health, the Department of Water Resources, and other ministries will work collaboratively to ensure the safety and well-being of the people. PM Narendra Modi has also appealed to all departments to work with the spirit of the entire nation.
