Paytm Payments Bank License Cancelled: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cancelled the license of Paytm Payments Bank Limited. The RBI took this decision following an audit report that revealed persistent non-compliance with regulations under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949. The central bank has clarified that it will no longer be able to provide any banking services, and an application for its winding up will be filed in the High Court. However, the central bank has assured that the bank possesses sufficient funds (liquidity) to return the deposits of all its customers. You may now be wondering: what impact will this have on Paytm users? In this context, we will explain how Paytm users might be affected by this decision by the RBI. Let's find out...

What will happen to the Paytm App and Soundbox?
Following this RBI decision, UPI services and other merchant payment facilities on the Paytm app—such as QR codes and the Soundbox—will continue to function without any interruption, just as they did before. This is because these services do not rely on Paytm Payments Bank; rather, they are operated in collaboration with other banks. This means that customers and merchants can continue to make payments via UPI through the Paytm app, scan QR codes at shops to make payments, and receive payment confirmations via the Soundbox.

Impact on FASTag and Wallets
No new top-ups or credit transactions can now be made in wallets and FASTags linked to the Payments Bank. This means that it will no longer be possible to add funds to these wallets or FASTags, nor will any new amounts be deposited into them. However, any existing balance can still be utilized in accordance with future guidelines issued by the bank or the company.

What will happen to the remaining funds?
If you still have a balance remaining in your wallet or bank account, you need not panic. The RBI has provided assurance that the bank possesses sufficient funds to return the money belonging to all its customers. Customers can either withdraw the existing balance from their accounts or spend it as per their requirements.

What happened in 2022 and 2024?
On March 11, 2022, the bank was barred from onboarding new customers. Subsequently, on January 31, 2024, and February 16, 2024, even stricter restrictions were imposed on it, including a ban on fresh deposits, credit, and wallet top-ups. Now, the bank's license has been completely cancelled by the RBI.
