Passport application fees have been revised effective July 1, 2026. Higher fees will now apply for obtaining a new passport or re-issuing an old one. According to new regulations issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, fees for various passport categories have been increased. Therefore, if you plan to apply for a passport soon, it would be beneficial to familiarize yourself with the new fee structure beforehand.

**What is the cost for a 36-page passport now?**
Starting July 1, 2026, the fee for obtaining or re-issuing a standard 36-page passport will be ₹2,500. Previously, the charge was ₹1,500; this means applicants will now have to spend an additional ₹1,000. Meanwhile, for those applying under the 'Tatkal' (expedited) service, the fee will now be ₹5,000, up from the earlier rate of ₹3,500.

**What is the fee for a 60-page passport?**
The fee for a standard 60-page passport (or its re-issuance) has been set at ₹3,500, whereas it previously cost ₹2,000. Additionally, the fee for the 'Tatkal' service in this category has been raised to ₹6,000.

**Increased fees for lost or damaged passports**
If a 36-page passport is lost or damaged, the cost to obtain a new one will be ₹5,000. Similarly, a fee of ₹6,000 will be charged to issue a new passport in place of a lost or damaged 60-page passport.

**Relief for children and senior citizens**
However, the government has provided relief to children up to 8 years of age and senior citizens over 60. Applicants in both these categories will receive a 10% discount on new passport applications. Please note that this discount applies only to applications for new passports. This exemption will not apply if the passport is being re-issued.

Consequently, if you plan to apply for a passport after July 1, 2026, you will be required to pay according to the new fee rates. Therefore, be sure to check the new fees and the details regarding your category before applying to avoid any issues later on.
