The Union Cabinet took several important decisions in the meeting on Monday (25 November). The PAN 2.0 project worth Rs 1,435 crore was approved in the meeting. Its purpose is to make the Permanent Account Number (PAN) a 'common business identifier' for all digital systems of government agencies. Under the PAN 2.0 project, PAN cards will be upgraded with a QR code for free.
Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the PAN 2.0 project of the Income Tax Department. Rs 1435 crore will be spent on the PAN 2.0 project.
Advanced form of PAN / TAN 1.0 ecosystem
The aim of this project is ease of access with better quality and faster delivery of service. This project is an e-governance project brought to redesign the business process of taxpayers registration service through technology-driven transformation of PAN / TAN service for better digital experience of taxpayers. According to the statement, it will be an advanced form of the existing PAN / TAN 1.0 ecosystem.
About 78 crore PANs issued
Currently, about 78 crore PANs have been issued in the country. 98 percent of these PANs have been issued at the individual level.
