Order to Switch from LPG to PNG: How Will This Bring Major Relief to the Common Man’s Pocket?
Gas Pipeline Connection Mandatory: Due to the conflict in Iran, the government has issued an order to discontinue LPG cylinders in areas where PNG (Piped Natural Gas) is available. Consumers are required to make the switch within three months; otherwise, their cylinder supply will be cut off.
Gas Pipeline Connection Mandatory: The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has placed significant pressure on India’s kitchen gas supply chain. To prevent potential gas shortages in the future, the government has issued new guidelines under the ‘Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026.’ Consumers will no longer have the option to choose between cylinders and a pipeline connection; instead, adopting PNG has become a legal requirement in areas served by a pipeline network.
3-Month Deadline and Suspension of Supply
The government has granted a grace period of three months (90 days) to all consumers residing in areas where the pipeline network has already been established. According to an order dated March 24, consumers must discontinue their existing LPG connections and switch to PNG within this stipulated timeframe. If a consumer fails to comply, their LPG cylinder supply will be permanently suspended after the 90-day period expires. The government’s objective is to gradually transition the public toward a cleaner and domestically sourced gas network.
Why is the Government Emphasizing PNG?
In light of geopolitical tensions and conflict-like situations, the government is strengthening the natural gas infrastructure to reduce dependence on foreign imports. The government’s ambitious goal is to extend the gas supply network—from major transmission lines—to every single household. To facilitate this, bureaucratic hurdles are being systematically dismantled. Gas distribution companies will no longer be required to navigate a maze of different government officials to obtain permissions for laying pipelines. Furthermore, the issue of Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) or housing societies obstructing such work has also been resolved; they are now legally mandated to grant access for the installation of pipelines.
A Uniform National Framework (One Nation, One Gas Grid)
Until now, the regulations governing the laying and operation of gas pipelines varied significantly across different states and cities. The government is now in the process of formulating a unified legal framework applicable to the entire nation. This will ensure uniformity in the construction and operation of the gas grid and accelerate the pace of work. The government aims to ensure that, just as electricity lines and water pipelines have reached every household, cooking gas too reaches every stove without any interruption.
What Will Be the Benefits for the People?
Compared to LPG, PNG is advantageous not only for the government but also for the common man. It eliminates the hassle of booking cylinders, waiting for delivery, or the fear of running out of gas midway through cooking. Economically, PNG also proves to be more affordable, as it does not entail costs associated with trucking, bottling plants, or dealer commissions. Furthermore, PNG is better for the environment because it burns more cleanly than coal, wood, or LPG, thereby reducing pollution.
