The National Pension System (NPS) ‘Tatkaal’ facility is now available on PhonePe and BHIM, allowing eligible users to open a pension account through a simple three-step digital process. This feature offers an easy way to start retirement savings via payment apps, reducing the effort required to register for the scheme. The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) announced the availability of this facility in a post on X on October 6. This move makes opening an NPS account possible on widely used digital payment platforms, potentially making it easier for first-time investors to begin retirement planning. However, before opening an account, users must check their bank's eligibility and understand the scheme's investment risks and withdrawal rules.

How to open an NPS account via PhonePe or BHIM
The PFRDA announcement outlines a three-step process for opening an NPS account through supported payment apps. Users can utilize the NPS Tatkaal facility, enter the necessary details, select an eligible bank account, and complete the initial contribution via UPI.

Upon successful verification of details and payment, the subscriber receives a Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN), which serves as the unique identification number for the NPS account.

Before starting the process, users should verify whether the NPS Tatkaal option is available on their app and if their bank is supported. Not every bank account linked to a payment app is necessarily eligible for this onboarding process.

What is the minimum investment?
The minimum initial contribution specified for NPS Tatkaal is ₹250. Users should check the amount displayed during registration and the applicable requirements before making the payment.

Opening an account through a payment app does not alter the fundamental functioning of NPS investments. Contributions are invested in market-linked instruments, and returns depend on the performance of the chosen pension fund and the investment options selected by the subscriber. Since NPS is designed for long-term retirement savings, it is essential for investors to assess their investment horizon and risk appetite before contributing.

NPS offers two main types of accounts. Tier I is the primary retirement account, subject to specific withdrawal conditions. Tier II is an optional investment account available to eligible Tier I subscribers, offering greater flexibility regarding withdrawals.

Investors should also understand the distinction between opening an account and making subsequent contributions. While digital payment platforms provide a convenient way to transact, account holders must still adhere to NPS regulations concerning investments, withdrawals, and scheme exits.

For those who have not yet started saving for retirement, NPS offers an immediate digital entry point. Before signing up, individuals should verify the availability of this feature on their preferred app, check bank eligibility, and understand the scheme's long-term terms and conditions.
