OpenAI reveals: 70% of people are asking personal questions from ChatGPT, less than 5% of people are using it for coding..

Artificial intelligence company OpenAI has released its first in-depth public study on ChatGPT users. The report is based on anonymous chat data from 1.5 million users (15 lakh) from May 2024 to June 2025. The results show that about 700 million people are using ChatGPT every week around the world.
The report shows that ChatGPT, which was once considered a new use of technology, has today become an important part of learning, gaining information, and communication. It revealed that people are using it most for practical advice, help in finding information, and writing. However, along with this, questions like ethics, privacy, and the accuracy of AI are also being raised.
The number of female users increased.
According to the study, the largest user base of ChatGPT is in the 18-25 age group. About half of the total conversation comes from this group. Interestingly, in 2025, for the first time, users with female names (52%) outnumbered users with male names (48%), while in 2023, 80% of users appeared to be male.
Change in conversation style.
According to the report, 28.3% of conversations focus on practical guidance, i.e., "how to" advice, fitness tips, and study-related help. At the same time, 73% of conversations have now become personal, which includes relationship advice, lifestyle suggestions, and personal questions. Writing assistance, such as email, editing, and personal communication, also plays a big role. At the same time, programming and AI coding questions have come down to just 4.2%.
Challenge to Google
By 2025, ChatGPT's popularity in terms of finding information will have started to match Google Search. People are preferring to ask questions directly to AI, which could affect Google's $55 billion advertising revenue.
The report also revealed that people have started using ChatGPT for e-commerce product information (1.9%) and as a personal companion or advisor. Keeping in mind the safety of children, OpenAI is working on parental control features.
Challenges remain
Despite the rapidly increasing use, false or misleading information (hallucinations) remains a big challenge. OpenAI is working on a confidence threshold and warning system to deal with this problem. At the same time, the company also clarified that privacy protection is being given priority, and one's personal chat will be analyzed by AI and not humans.
To make this study reliable, OpenAI has collaborated with The Washington Post. Its purpose is that ChatGPT's answers can include verified and reliable reporting.
