The shift towards online studies during Covid-19 has negatively affected the ability of children to write, read, and think.

When schools were closed during the Corona period and children had to study from home, online classes became the only option. But the results that are coming out now are worrying. According to a research, online studies have slowed down the intellectual ability of children. Their ability to think, write and understand has decreased than before.

According to the report of Jagran, the teachers of Gautam Buddha University did an in-depth study in this direction and found that there has been a decline in language grasp, memory and analytical ability among students studying through online medium. Assistant Professor of the University's Department of Education Dr. Bharti Singh and her colleague Dr. Anand Singh led this research.

What does the research say?

Students of class VIII and XII were selected for the research. In the study, it was observed that the writing style, reading ability, understanding and remembering power of these children has become weaker than before. Children who used to easily write 300-400 words earlier, now get tired in 100-150 words only.

Case Study 1: Experience of an eighth class student

A student said that she is no longer able to read like before. It has become difficult to concentrate for a long time. I feel lazy to write and the power to remember words has also become weak. She also said that ever since offline classes have started again, she has to work harder to understand the subjects.

Case Study 2: A class XII student also said - attention gets diverted

In another case, a class XII student said that during online studies, his attention used to go more towards mobile and social media. He is still not able to give much time to books. Writing long answers and thinking deeply has become a challenge for him.

Thinking ability affected

Researchers said that in online studies, children only had to sit in front of the screen and listen and watch. Their practice of writing and thinking on their own decreased. This is the reason why now a decrease in analytical thinking and creativity is being seen in children.

Assistant Professor of Gautam Buddha University, Dr. Anand Singh says that to improve the intellectual ability of children, now we have to increase the practice of writing and reading along with offline education. He told that now he is making the students spend 30 to 40 minutes every day in the class only in handwriting and thinking tasks.

Lack of confidence among students too

Dr. Bharti Singh said that the most worrying thing that has come to light in this research is that the confidence of children has also decreased during online studies. They are no longer able to express their views openly and are afraid of getting low marks in the exam. Online education has made children less talkative and shy.
