Onions to be sold at ₹35/kg in these 5 cities; government makes major announcement

To curb rising onion prices, the government has initiated the wholesale supply of onions from Nashik, Maharashtra, via a special 'Kanda Express' train. This move is expected to bring down prices.

The festive season is approaching. During this time, it is impossible for millions of Indian families to ignore the rising cost of onions. To rein in these soaring prices across the country, the government has begun transporting its reserve stocks via special railway rakes to cities where consumers are facing high prices. The government has named this operation 'Kanda Express'.

According to Nidhi Khare, Secretary of Consumer Affairs, the onions are initially being sent to five major cities with high consumption, where they will be sold at a subsidized rate of ₹35 per kilogram. The consignment currently being loaded onto the 'Kanda Express' is expected to reach the designated markets by Wednesday, August 26.
