One in four Jan Dhan accounts is inactive; 5.72 crore accounts have zero balance – RTI

It is often observed that while many people open bank accounts, they eventually stop using them. If you are a Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana account holder and haven't used your account for an extended period, this information is for you. Although crores of accounts have been opened under the Jan Dhan Yojana, surprisingly, their usage remains very low.

In fact, data obtained via RTI indicates that approximately one out of every four Jan Dhan accounts opened in the country is not in use. Let us find out which states have the highest number of inactive accounts.

Which states have the highest number of inactive accounts?

Uttar Pradesh leads the list of inoperative accounts, with 3.23 crore inactive Jan Dhan accounts.
This is followed by Bihar, with 1.59 crore inactive accounts.
Madhya Pradesh has 1.35 crore inactive accounts.
West Bengal has 1.02 crore inactive accounts.
And Maharashtra has 97.94 lakh inactive accounts.
5.72 crore accounts have no funds

According to RTI data, more than 5.72 crore Jan Dhan Yojana accounts have no deposited funds.
Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of zero-balance accounts at 95.92 lakh.
This is followed by Bihar with 62.35 lakh.
West Bengal has 37.30 lakh.
Assam has 36.30 lakh.
And Maharashtra has 36.04 lakh accounts with zero balance.

When was the scheme launched?

It is worth noting that this scheme was launched in August 2014; the objective of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana was to bring as many people as possible into the banking system.

Uttar Pradesh leads the list with 10.51 crore Jan Dhan accounts.
This is followed by Bihar with 7.01 crore accounts.
West Bengal has 5.73 crore accounts.

And Maharashtra has 3.85 crore accounts recorded.
