The government has now decided to completely ban online money games. These are games played online and involve wagering. A new law has recently been enacted for this purpose, which will come into effect nationwide from October 1, 2025. Under this law, strict action will be taken not only against gambling-related games, but also against the promotion and money transactions related to such games. Any individual or company found operating, promoting, or handling such games could face jail time and a fine of lakhs of rupees.

What is the government saying?

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav stated on Thursday that the government had been in talks with online gaming companies for the past three years. Now, the law has been passed by Parliament and its rules have been finalized. He said, "We have spoken to banks, companies, and everyone else. Now the time has come to implement these rules. If anyone needs more time to prepare, we are open to discussions, but for now, we are implementing it from October 1." Vaishnav also stated that the government relies entirely on consultation and will hold further discussions with industry leaders before implementing the rules.

Which games will be banned?
The government has made it clear that anyone violating the new rules will face strict punishment. Any individual or company promoting online gambling-like games could face up to two years in prison and a fine of up to ₹50 lakh. Banks or online payment apps that facilitate money transactions in these games could face up to three years in prison and a fine of up to ₹1 crore. Furthermore, those who repeatedly violate the rules could face increased penalties. The government has sent a clear message that it is best to stay away from online money games or face strict action.

Banks are also ordered to be vigilant.
The government has clearly instructed banks and fintech companies, such as online payment apps, to update their technology to comply with the new rules. In a meeting held in September, these companies stated that they needed more time for technical changes. The government has assured cooperation, but there will be no relaxation of the law. This means that the rules will be strictly enforced and no one will be able to escape them.

Why did the government introduce such a law?
In the past few years, online money games have drained people's pockets. According to a report in the Economic Times, approximately 450 million people in the country are trapped in such games and have lost approximately ₹20,000 crore in the past year. These games were spreading rapidly, especially among children, youth, and the unemployed. People were drowning in debt, and many families were breaking up. For these reasons, the government has now decided to take strict action to prevent this loss.
