Google QR Code: Gmail is mostly used in the office or corporate world in the country. It has been seen many times that people reset their password through OTP when they forget Gmail password. But Google is now going to end this OTP system. Actually, now Google is coming up with QR code based verify system. This change is being done with the aim of making security stronger because six-digit codes sent by SMS can be affected by fraudulent techniques like phishing attacks and SIM-swapping. According to a Forbes report, this new system will be implemented in the coming months.
Confirmed by Gmail
For your information, let us tell you that Gmail spokesperson Ross Richenderfer has confirmed this new system. Apart from this, he said that now instead of receiving the code on their phone number, users will see a QR code on the screen, which they will have to scan with their phone's camera app. This process will not only be easy but will also be more effective in terms of security.
Why is SMS based verification not safe?
So far Google used to verify users' accounts by sending codes via SMS. However, many flaws were found in this entire process. Cybercriminals can get their codes by deceiving users with phishing techniques. Through SIM-swapping attacks, they can take control of someone's mobile number and access their Gmail account. Google found that SMS based verification was also being used by hackers for scams. This is called traffic pumping or toll fraud in which cybercriminals earn money by sending verification codes to fake numbers. Keeping this in mind, Google has now decided to implement this new system.
QR code will be more secure
Adopting QR code technology will greatly improve security. This system connects users directly with Google to avoid fraud in the middle. This means that risks like phishing attacks and SIM swapping will be almost eliminated as there will be no need to share any code that can be stolen.
Google has clarified the intention behind this change by saying that SMS codes pose a security risk to users and the company is constantly improving its security measures to protect users from cyber threats. Although the exact launch date has not been announced yet, Google has indicated that more updates will be given on this soon.
