Driving License to Get ATM-Like Makeover: 25 Key Features Coming Soon, Know the Difference from Old Cards

The Central Government is set to revamp driving licenses (DL) and vehicle registration certificates (RC) under its ambitious ‘One Nation, One Card’ initiative. Beginning late September or early October 2025, these cards will roll out with advanced security features, microchips, and QR codes. The new design will closely resemble an ATM card, making them modern, durable, and easier to verify.

According to reports, the cards will be produced at a central facility in Bengaluru before being dispatched directly to applicants. States like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have already begun preparations for implementation.

What Makes the New DL Different?

Unlike the current driving license, which carries only limited details such as license number, address, date of birth, blood group, and type of vehicle authorized, the upgraded card will include 25 categories of information.

Some of the major additions include:

  • Emergency contact details

  • Option to register for organ donation

  • Biometric data integration

  • Near Field Communication (NFC) support for instant verification

With NFC technology, traffic police and authorities will be able to retrieve driver data quickly, ensuring faster checks and stricter enforcement of rules.

ATM-Style Design for Durability

The new cards will be manufactured from polycarbonate material, replacing the earlier PVC (polyvinyl chloride) base. The polycarbonate build makes them stronger, long-lasting, and resistant to damage.

Just like ATM or debit cards, the details will be engraved using laser printing. This method ensures the information remains legible over time and cannot fade or be easily tampered with.

Unlike before, when regional transport offices (RTOs) across Karnataka issued the cards, all new licenses will now be produced at a dedicated cell in Bengaluru headquarters and delivered directly to applicants’ homes.

How to Apply for the New Driving License Online

Applicants who want to obtain a new driving license can apply conveniently through the Parivahan Sewa portal (parivahan.gov.in). The process is straightforward:

  1. Visit the official Parivahan Sewa website.

  2. Select your state from the options.

  3. Choose the “Apply for Driving License” section.

  4. Enter your details in the application form.

  5. Upload the required documents.

  6. In some states, you may also need to upload a photograph and signature.

  7. Book a slot for your driving test.

  8. Pay the applicable application fee online.

  9. On the scheduled date, visit the RTO with original documents and fee receipt.

  10. Appear for the driving test. On passing, you will receive your new DL.

No Mandatory RTO Test from June 2024

In a significant policy shift, the government revised the rules for driving license issuance from June 1, 2024. Applicants are no longer required to appear for the test at the RTO. Instead, they can take the driving test at any private driving school recognized by the RTO.

This move aims to reduce the burden on regional offices while making the process more convenient for applicants. However, only tests conducted at approved driving schools will be considered valid.

When Will the New Cards Be Available?

The upgraded cards are expected to be issued by the end of September or the first week of October 2025. Once rolled out, all new applicants will receive the updated version, while existing cardholders will gradually transition to the new format.

With advanced security features, broader data points, and ATM-like durability, India’s driving license system is about to undergo a major digital upgrade.
