Ujjwala Yojana Subsidy: The general public across the country has been hit hard by inflation once again. A price hike for domestic LPG cylinders has been announced. The price of a 14.2 kg cooking gas cylinder has been increased by ₹29.

Following this hike, the price of a domestic gas cylinder in the national capital, Delhi, has reached ₹942. However, the current conversation is dominated more by the confusion and uproar surrounding the subsidy provided under the 'Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana' (PMUY), which has caused anxiety among crores of poor families.

Government alters its press release early in the morning

The Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas made a surprising error early in the morning on June 7, 2026.

5:59 AM (First Press Release): The Ministry stated on the PIB website that despite rising gas prices in the international market, prices in India were raised by only ₹29. It also mentioned that Ujjwala beneficiaries would continue to receive the ₹300 subsidy as before, making the effective cost of a cylinder ₹642 for them. However, this release was deleted shortly thereafter.

8:02 AM (Second/New Press Release): The government issued a new note that completely changed the subsidy calculations.

Will the ₹300 subsidy now be available on only 4 cylinders per year? The government's new press release explicitly states: "Beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) will receive a Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) of ₹300 per cylinder on the first four refills (4 cylinders) each year, effectively bringing the cost of these refills to ₹642; this assistance remains unchanged."

Has the rule changed?

Previously, beneficiaries under the Ujjwala Yojana received a subsidy of ₹300 per cylinder for up to nine cylinders annually. However, according to the new release, the ₹300 subsidy (totaling ₹1,200 per year) will now be credited to accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) only for the first four cylinders consumed in a year. The government's rationale behind this is that an average Ujjwala household consumes only four cylinders annually.

Helpline says: We only have the old update

When the 'Prabhat Khabar' team contacted the Ujjwala helpline (18002666696) to seek clarification on this matter, the representative, David Rai, stated that the helpline's system still reflects the rule of providing a subsidy for nine cylinders annually. The helpline center has not yet received any official update regarding the ministry's new press release concerning the four-cylinder limit. This discrepancy has led to significant confusion among the general public.
