No transactions in your bank account for years—will your money be lost?

Not conducting transactions in a bank account for a long period does not mean your deposited money will disappear; however, the bank may impose certain restrictions on the account. Therefore, it is advisable to periodically check the status of any old bank accounts you may have.

Often, people stop using an old bank account and lose track of the funds held within it—a situation that frequently occurs after changing jobs, moving to another city, or opening a new bank account elsewhere. Consequently, the money remains untouched for years. This often leads people to wonder: could my money be lost if no transactions are made for a long time?

The key point is that your money does not vanish due to a lack of transactions, though the bank may place certain restrictions on the account. If you have a bank account that has not been used for a long time, this information is relevant to you.

When is an account considered closed due to a lack of transactions?

A bank may classify an account as "inactive" if no transactions have occurred for 12 months; however, the specific status depends on the bank's internal policies. If there are no customer-initiated transactions for 24 consecutive months (i.e., two years), the account may be classified as "inoperative" or "dormant." Being classified as inoperative does not mean the deposited funds are lost; the account continues to earn interest in accordance with the rules applicable to savings accounts.

What happens if money remains in an account for 10 years?

If a bank account remains inactive—with no transactions or claims made on the deposited funds—for 10 consecutive years, the bank transfers the balance to the Reserve Bank of India’s Depositor Education and Awareness (DEA) Fund. However, this does not mean that your money has become the property of the government or that you can no longer recover it. In such a situation, you or your legal heir can claim the funds from the bank by submitting the necessary documents.

How can you reactivate an old bank account?

Contact the relevant branch of the bank where you hold the old account and submit a request to reactivate it. Following this, complete the necessary KYC updates as required by the bank. Submit the bank’s prescribed form or application to initiate the reactivation process. Once the required procedures are fulfilled, the bank will complete the process of reactivating your account.
