When traveling long distances by car, you often use expressways, where you are required to pay a toll tax at toll plazas. High traffic volumes at these plazas often lead to long queues, resulting in significant time wastage. To save time, the government introduced FASTag to simplify payments; however, long queues still occur. Consequently, the NHAI is taking measures to reduce congestion at toll plazas so that commuters do not have to stop to make payments.

**Is toll tax waived if the queue at the toll plaza exceeds 100 meters?**
Many people believe that if the queue of vehicles at a toll plaza exceeds 100 meters, they are exempt from paying the tax. There is also a viral belief that if a delay of more than three minutes occurs at the toll plaza, the toll becomes free. If you hold this view, you are mistaken; it is important to understand the actual facts regarding this matter.

**NHAI clarifies the facts about toll tax**
Sharing information on the social media platform X, the NHAI clarified that a queue exceeding 100 meters does not mean vehicles are exempt from toll tax. The notion that such vehicles would be permitted to pass through the toll plaza for free is merely a misconception.

The NHAI also clarified that the claim regarding a toll waiver for delays exceeding three minutes—allowing vehicles to pass without paying—is nothing more than a rumor with no basis in truth.

**Penalties for violating toll rules**
There is no provision for toll-free passage on national highways. If tax is not being collected at a toll plaza, it is because the plaza has been officially closed in accordance with government regulations. Passing through a standard toll plaza without paying the tax constitutes a violation of the rules. Doing so could result in a fine or the blacklisting of the FASTag.
