Tele-Law Service: People often find themselves in situations where they need legal advice. But not everyone has the money to pay a lawyer's hefty fees. Many people, simply due to a lack of information, become afraid or make wrong decisions. It's not necessary for every dispute to go to court. Therefore, getting the right advice at the right time can solve half the problem.

To this end, the government has launched a facility that allows legal advice to be obtained from home. No long lines, no repeated visits to the office. Just one call or video connection, and you can speak directly with a lawyer. What is the Tele-Law Service?

This is a digital initiative of the Department of Justice, Government of India, launched in 2017. The aim is to provide accurate legal advice before filing a lawsuit, preventing small disputes from escalating into larger cases. It was jointly implemented by the Ministry of Law and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

It has been specifically designed for rural and vulnerable communities. Those who face difficulties in accessing a lawyer can now also seek professional guidance. The entire system operates on an online platform, saving both time and money.

How is legal advice obtained?

Under this service, people are connected to empanelled lawyers via phone or video call. Common Service Centers (CSCs) across the country play a key role in this. These centers, located at the village or panchayat level, help connect people.

In addition, the Tele-Law Mobile App is also available for mobile users, from which applications can be submitted directly. During the allotted time slot, the lawyer listens to your problem for approximately 20 minutes and provides guidance as per the law. This allows for a solution to be found at the initial stage without going to court.

In which cases can you get help?

This service is provided by the government for a variety of matters. It provides guidance in matters such as family disputes, divorce, domestic violence, maintenance, property disputes, wage issues, FIR procedures, or SC/ST atrocities. Previously, a nominal fee was charged for some cases, but now this service is completely free for all citizens. You no longer have to go to court for legal advice.
