If you wish to switch the bank associated with your FASTag, you do not need to purchase a new tag or remove the existing one from your vehicle's windshield to affix a replacement. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a new provision—'OneTag'—on its 'Rajmargyatra' app, eliminating the need to acquire a new FASTag. This feature removes the hassle previously associated with switching FASTag providers.
Previously, changing the issuing bank required obtaining a completely new FASTag. Now, however, the 'OneTag' feature allows you to port your FASTag from one bank to another. This means the physical tag on your vehicle remains unchanged, while the linked bank and wallet are updated.
**How to change your FASTag bank**
First, log in to the NHAI's 'Rajmargyatra' app and enter your vehicle's registration number. The app will then indicate whether the FASTag linked to that registration number is eligible for porting. If eligible, you must obtain a 6-digit MVC (a type of verification code) from your current FASTag bank.
Next, select the new bank within the app and complete the new bank's KYC and wallet setup procedures. Once these steps are finished, your existing FASTag will be linked to the new bank, effectively porting it over.
**What happens to the balance on the old FASTag? ****
Upon completion of the porting process, your old bank will close the previous wallet and refund any remaining balance to your account. However, certain deductions may apply in accordance with the rules.
**Cannot switch banks immediately after porting**
Under the OneTag portability rules, FASTag porting cannot be done repeatedly. Once you have switched your FASTag bank, you must wait six months before you can port it again. In other words, you can port your FASTag to another bank after six months.
