The government has taken a big step to promote Indian languages. Web addresses of many government websites can now be typed in Hindi, which means dependence on English will soon end. The government has started using Hindi web addresses on many government websites to make the Internet user-friendly. In the coming few years, Indian languages, especially Hindi, will get universal acceptance. In such a situation, people who do not know English will be able to open any website by typing in Hindi.

The web address in Hindi

The government has made a big change in Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) under the Universal Acceptance Initiative, through which web addresses and email IDs can be created in Indian languages. For example, the URL of the website of the Ministry of Home Affairs of the Government of India is now ready in Hindi as well. Users can type mha.gov.in as well as home ministry.government.in to open the website of the Ministry of Home Affairs. This website can be accessed in both English and Hindi languages.

Home Ministry Hindi Domain

According to the report, the country code .in used in the domain of the web address has been replaced with .Bharat. Apart from Hindi, it will soon be used in other Indian languages such as Tamil, Telugu, etc. Since the invention of the Internet, only English characters are used in the Domain Name System (DNS). The main reason for this is that initially computer coding standards were based on ASCII, which were limited to English characters only. Because of this, it was impossible to create a website or email address in any other language.

Technical problem solved

Since 1980, researchers were working to support non-English languages. Now web browsers convert the codes of different languages and users see web addresses in their language. However, many Hindi or other language websites available in India still use English web addresses. To promote local languages, the Government of India has now started providing Hindi web addresses to many government websites. .bharat will be used in the domain name of these websites.

Apart from the Home Ministry, the web addresses of the websites of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Ministry of Minority Affairs and National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) are now available in Hindi. For this, Bhashanet program is being run so that other government agencies can also use local language IDNs.
