NHAI Simplifies FASTag KYV Process — Here’s What’s New for Vehicle Owners

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a major update that will make life easier for millions of FASTag users across the country. The authority has simplified the ‘Know Your Vehicle’ (KYV) process, a key verification step for FASTag holders. Under the new rule, users will now need to upload only the front photo of their vehicle, eliminating the earlier requirement for a side image.

This move is aimed at improving user convenience and reducing technical hurdles, ensuring that FASTag services remain uninterrupted while maintaining the authenticity of vehicle-linked tags.

What is the KYV Process and Why is it Important?

The Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process is a verification system designed to confirm that a FASTag is linked to the correct vehicle. Just like a KYC (Know Your Customer) for individuals, KYV ensures transparency and prevents misuse.

Every FASTag user must upload a clear photo of their vehicle and verify key registration details such as the vehicle number and chassis number. This helps authorities ensure that one FASTag is not being used across multiple vehicles — a practice that has led to misuse and confusion in toll systems in the past.

By making this verification simpler, NHAI aims to strengthen the integrity of toll collection and reduce fraudulent practices, while also making the process more user-friendly for regular vehicle owners.

The New Rule — No More Side Photo Required

Until now, FASTag users were required to submit both front and side photos of their vehicle as part of the KYV process. However, the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) — the NHAI’s technical and operational arm — has now revised this rule.

Under the new system, only a front-facing vehicle photo is required, clearly showing the number plate and FASTag sticker. This simple change removes a significant pain point for users who faced issues in capturing and uploading multiple images, especially through mobile devices.

Auto-Fetch of Vehicle Information

NHAI has also upgraded the backend of the KYV system to automatically fetch vehicle details. When a user enters their vehicle number, chassis number, or registered mobile number, the system retrieves the registration data directly from the central database.

In cases where a single mobile number is linked to multiple vehicles, the system allows the user to select the specific vehicle for which they wish to complete the KYV. This smart update not only reduces manual entry errors but also streamlines the entire verification experience.

No Immediate Suspension of FASTag Services

Earlier, if users failed to complete the KYV process on time, their FASTag services were suspended immediately, leading to inconvenience at toll plazas. But NHAI has now made the policy more flexible.

If your KYV is still pending, your FASTag will not be deactivated right away. Instead, users will receive timely SMS alerts and reminders to complete the verification. This gives vehicle owners sufficient time to finish the process without fear of instant disruption in toll payments.

Support and Assistance for Users

To further simplify the process, FASTag-issuing banks have been directed to assist customers who face difficulties in completing their KYV. Users can contact their respective banks or reach out to NHAI’s dedicated helpline at 1033 for support and queries.

In addition, detailed instructions for the new KYV process are available on the official NHAI and IHMCL websites, along with step-by-step guides to uploading vehicle photos and verifying details.

Why This Change Matters

This decision reflects NHAI’s ongoing commitment to digitizing India’s highway infrastructure and improving the ease of doing business for everyday citizens. Simplifying FASTag verification will not only enhance compliance but also ensure seamless toll collection, faster highway movement, and fewer delays at toll booths.

With this update, NHAI is making FASTag more accessible, reliable, and user-friendly, especially for small vehicle owners, transport operators, and fleet managers.

Bottom Line:
If you’re a FASTag user, you no longer need to worry about multiple photo uploads or service disruptions. Just upload a clear front photo of your vehicle, verify your details, and you’re good to go. NHAI’s new KYV process ensures that toll transactions stay smooth, digital, and transparent — just as India’s highways continue to get smarter.
