New UPI Rules from August 1: Daily Limits Introduced on Balance Checks, Status Views, and More

Starting August 1, 2025, significant changes are coming to the way Indians use UPI for digital payments. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which manages UPI, is implementing five new rules aimed at reducing server load and ensuring faster and more secure transactions. With the growing number of users and complaints related to transaction delays and failures—especially between April and May 2025—NPCI has taken these steps to optimize the system’s performance.
These changes will impact users of popular apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm, especially those who frequently check balances or transaction statuses. Here’s a detailed breakdown of what’s changing and how it could affect your daily digital payment habits.
✅ 1. Daily Limit for Balance Checks: Max 50 Times
From August 1, users will only be able to check their bank balance via UPI apps up to 50 times per day. Excessive balance checks are said to be a major reason behind system slowdowns. Limiting this feature is expected to ease server pressure and improve transaction speed for everyone.
✅ 2. Linked Bank Accounts Check: Max 25 Times Per Day
Users will also face a restriction on how many times they can view their linked bank accounts on a single app. You’ll now be able to check your linked accounts only 25 times a day. This step is especially relevant for those managing multiple accounts from the same UPI app.
✅ 3. Payment Status Check: Just 3 Attempts Allowed Daily
In case of pending or failed transactions, you’ll now be allowed to check the payment status only three times a day. Moreover, there must be a minimum gap of 90 seconds between each attempt. This rule aims to discourage repeated and rapid checking that strains system resources.
✅ 4. Time Window Set for Autopay Transactions
NPCI is also introducing specific time slots for processing Autopay transactions like SIPs, EMIs, subscriptions, or utility bills. These will now be processed only during:
-
Before 10:00 AM
-
Between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM
-
After 9:30 PM
By spreading out Autopay loads, NPCI aims to prevent congestion during peak hours.
✅ 5. Chargeback Request Limit: 10 Times Per Month
Users will now be able to raise chargeback or payment reversal requests up to 10 times a month, and only 5 times per individual/entity. This measure is designed to control unnecessary disputes and fraudulent claims.
📢 Why Are These Rules Being Introduced?
According to NPCI, a sharp rise in complaints regarding failed or delayed UPI payments—especially in April and May 2025—prompted a detailed system audit. It revealed that a significant number of users were frequently checking balances or payment statuses, which increased load and slowed down services.
By putting these limits in place, NPCI hopes to:
-
Streamline the UPI experience
-
Ensure faster and more reliable transactions
-
Prevent misuse and reduce unnecessary system strain
🧾 Final Word for UPI Users
If you're someone who casually checks your balance or payment statuses now and then, these rules might not affect you much. However, for power users or businesses that rely heavily on UPI, adjusting to these new limits will be essential to avoid disruptions.
The new UPI guidelines reflect NPCI’s broader goal of making digital payments safer, more efficient, and future-ready—especially as the country moves toward a cashless economy.
