To crack down on cybercrime, banks, NBFCs, and payment banks will now use the Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) as a weapon. Under FRI, government agencies monitor mobile numbers involved in cybercrime. Such numbers are placed in three categories. For high-risk numbers, now all financial institutions, including banks, are alerted, which can warn their customers about the amount coming into the account and that the account linked to a particular mobile number is being used in cybercrime.

FRI system launched in May 2025
The Digital Intelligence Unit (DIU) of the Ministry of Telecommunications launched a new system called FRI in May 2025. Its full name is Financial Fraud Risk Indicator. This system divides a mobile number into three categories (medium, high, and very high risk) to determine the risk of fraud associated with that number. This information is prepared by combining several sources. Such as the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP), DOT's Chakshu platform, and intelligence reports provided by banks and financial institutions.

OMG! This deadly thing has entered the human body, and scientists expressed concern.
The advantage of this is that banks, NBFCs (non-banking financial companies), and UPI service providers can decide which mobile number to be more cautious. If the risk of a number is high, then they can take additional steps to protect the user. Apart from this, the Digital Intelligence Unit (DIU) also prepares the Mobile Number Revocation List (MNRL).

How will FRI work?
The Digital Intelligence Unit shares this list with all the concerned institutions. This list contains details of those mobile numbers that have been blocked due to cybercrime, fraud, misuse, or failure in Aadhaar verification. Many of these numbers are used in fraud. The graph of cybercrime in the country is constantly increasing.

So much loss was caused by digital fraud in 2014-15

Scammers are emptying people's pockets by adopting various tricks. This year, the Finance Ministry had said that as online payment has increased in the last 10 years, the number of people committing digital crimes has also increased. In the year 2014-15, there was a loss of 18.46 crores due to digital fraud. Cases of cyber fraud are coming to light every day. Many times scammers make people their victims by sending a link.

As soon as people click on such a link, they get trapped in the trap of cyber fraudsters and lose their hard-earned money. The government is working at many levels to curb this. Various programs are also being run to make people aware.
