The Indian Railways has introduced a new system at 60 major railway stations across the country to prevent overcrowding. Under this initiative, only passengers with confirmed tickets will be allowed to enter the platforms, and all unauthorized entry points will be sealed.

Key Decisions Taken by Indian Railways

In a high-level meeting chaired by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Thursday, discussions were held regarding crowd control at railway stations. Several crucial measures were decided upon to enhance passenger safety and improve station management.

Implementation of the New System

The system is being implemented immediately at six major railway stations as part of a pilot project:

  • New Delhi

  • Anand Vihar

  • Surat

  • Varanasi

  • Ayodhya

  • Patna

Passengers will now be allowed to enter platforms only when their train arrives. Additionally, waiting areas outside stations, which were temporarily set up during the Maha Kumbh, will now be made permanent.

Measures to Enhance Passenger Management

  • Sealing of Unauthorized Entry Points: All unauthorized access points at these stations will be closed to prevent overcrowding.

  • Ticket Verification at Entry: Only passengers with confirmed tickets will be allowed on platforms.

  • Foot-over Bridge Construction: A new, wider foot-over bridge (12 meters in length and 6 meters in width) will be constructed to facilitate easy movement between platforms.

  • Surveillance Cameras: High-resolution CCTV cameras will be installed at all stations and surrounding areas for enhanced security.

  • War Rooms at Major Stations: Dedicated war rooms will be set up at large stations to monitor crowd control in real time.

Restrictions on Ticket Sales

The Railway Ministry has decided that tickets will not be sold beyond the capacity of the trains. This move is aimed at preventing unnecessary congestion at stations.

Fixed Dress Code for Railway Employees

  • Railway staff and service personnel at stations will now follow a uniform dress code.

  • Identity cards and newly designed uniforms will be issued to ensure easy identification.

  • In case of emergencies, the uniform will help in quickly identifying railway staff.

Role of the Station Director

A senior officer will be appointed as the Station Director, responsible for overseeing the entire station management system. The director will have financial powers to take immediate action in case of any irregularities or emergencies.

Conclusion

This initiative is expected to significantly reduce overcrowding at railway stations and enhance passenger safety. If successful, the system may be expanded to more stations nationwide. The Indian Railways aims to provide a smooth, secure, and hassle-free travel experience for all passengers through these strategic measures.
