New rules issued for changing names in Aadhaar; check UIDAI guidelines

UIDAI has revised the rules for updating names in Aadhaar. The new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), effective from September 18, outlines distinct processes and documentation requirements for minor spelling corrections, name changes following marriage or divorce, and complete name changes.

If your name is recorded incorrectly on your Aadhaar card or you wish to make a change, this information is relevant to you. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has modified the rules for updating Aadhaar details. Name changes are now categorized based on their nature, and specific documents may be required for each type of modification.

The revised SOP came into effect on September 18. The new rules specify different procedures for various scenarios—ranging from correcting minor spelling errors to changing a name after marriage or divorce, or even a complete name change. Let us look at the rules applicable to different types of name changes.

What constitutes a minor name change?

Under UIDAI's new rules, certain common and minor name modifications are classified as "minor corrections." These include:

Expanding initials or short forms in the name.
Adding or removing a middle name or surname.
Rearranging the order of words in the name.
Correcting minor spelling errors in names with similar pronunciations.
Removing dots or periods from the name.
Correcting capitalization errors (e.g., incorrect use of capital letters).
For instance, changing 'Gaanesh' to 'Ganesh' or removing the dot from 'R.P. Singh' would fall under the category of minor corrections. In such cases, a valid proof of identity corresponding to the change may be required.

What are the rules for changing a name after marriage or divorce? Separate provisions exist for changing a surname or name following marriage or divorce. In such cases, you must submit an affidavit—as per the prescribed 'Annexure D'—along with your Proof of Identity (PoI). The affidavit must state that the name change is due to marriage or divorce and that the individual's identity remains unchanged.

What happens if the name recorded in Aadhaar is incorrect?

If the name was correct in the documents submitted during Aadhaar enrollment or a previous update but was recorded incorrectly in the Aadhaar records, it may be treated as a data entry error.

For adults, you may be required to submit an affidavit as per the prescribed 'Annexure B', along with Proof of Identity or Proof of Relationship.
In the case of minors, the necessary documents must be submitted along with an affidavit as per the prescribed 'Annexure C'.
If the name is correct in English but incorrect in the regional language, a different procedure will apply.

What happens if the full name is changed?

If you wish to change your full name, or if the change is significant enough to alter your perceived identity, it will be treated as a 'major name change'. Consequently, in accordance with UIDAI regulations, you may be required to submit a Gazette Notification along with the prescribed identity documents.
