New Rules Issued: Filming Videos or Flying Drones Near Railway Tracks (Including Vande Bharat) Could Lead to Trouble

Do you enjoy making videos on railway tracks? Or perhaps you like capturing footage of the Vande Bharat Express using a drone? If so, take heed—the Railways has introduced new, stricter regulations regarding such activities.

Individuals who post reels and videos on social media—especially travel vloggers—frequently film railway tracks and trains. During their journeys, they often capture footage of trains, railway bridges, tunnels, and scenic rail routes. Many even use drones to get striking shots; however, such practices will no longer be permitted.

Indian Railways has decided to take strict action against anyone flying drones over railway tracks, stations, or other railway property without prior authorization. According to the Railways, such drone operations pose a risk to train services, railway infrastructure, and public safety.

A Warning to Drone Users

Many vloggers and enthusiasts who enjoy documenting the beauty of the railways currently use drones to film trains, bridges, tunnels, and picturesque routes. Footage of trains like the Vande Bharat Express, in particular, is quite popular on social media. Moving forward, however, flying drones over railway property without official permission will not be allowed.

No Compromise on Safety

Railway tracks are surrounded by electrical lines and other sensitive infrastructure. Drones in these areas could disrupt train operations and jeopardize public safety. Consequently, obtaining permission from the relevant authorities is now mandatory before filming trains or railway tracks with a drone.

What Are the Railway’s Directives?

Southern Railway has urged the public to refrain from entering railway tracks, bridges, or restricted zones—whether for photography or videography—without obtaining proper authorization. The Railways states that any drone-based filming involving railway property must only be conducted after obtaining the necessary permissions from the competent authorities. Following amendments to relevant provisions under the ‘Jan Vishwas Act’ this year, the Railways has further emphasized the importance of adhering to these regulations and securing the required clearances.

Videos can be recorded using mobile phones

There is no prohibition on taking photographs or recording videos using mobile phones at railway stations. Since drone-based filming and mobile-phone-based recording are distinct matters, it would be incorrect to assume that all forms of photography are banned at railway stations. However, entering restricted areas or recording videos in a manner that compromises safety can lead to punitive action.

Why was this decision taken?

Notably, a recent incident occurred in Kollam, Kerala, where an individual was found illegally operating a drone over the Kappil-Edava railway line. Upon learning of the incident, the Railways initiated legal proceedings against the individual. The court subsequently imposed a fine on the person and sentenced them to one day of community service.
