New Rule for SSC CBT Exams: Action to be Taken for Unauthorized Computer Restarts

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has issued a crucial advisory for candidates and staff deployed at exam centers for computer-based recruitment exams. The Commission has restricted specific activities concerning the computer systems used during the examination. Candidates and exam personnel will no longer be permitted to restart, shut down, or alter the computer systems on their own initiative. Such actions will require the permission of authorized exam staff and adherence to prescribed procedures. The Commission noted that in previous examinations, instances occurred where candidates—either independently or in collusion with exam staff—attempted to restart, change, or otherwise tamper with computer systems despite there being no technical malfunction. Consequently, the Commission determined that such activities could compromise the integrity and fairness of the examination.

Ban on Restarting or Shutting Down Computers

Under the new advisory, candidates are prohibited from restarting or shutting down the computer system on their own at the exam center. Additionally, changing the computer or monitor is forbidden. If such a procedure becomes necessary, it must be carried out solely by authorized exam staff in accordance with established rules. Candidates are not permitted to make any modifications to the system themselves.

What to Do in Case of Technical Issues During the Exam?

If a technical issue arises with the computer before the exam begins or while the paper is in progress, candidates must not attempt to fix the system themselves. In such situations, they must immediately report the problem to the center staff, invigilator, or exam personnel. The exam center staff will then assess the technical issue and take appropriate action. Necessary steps will be taken only after obtaining permission from the authorized representative of the regional office, the investigating officer, or the center coordinator.

Action to be taken for rule violations

In an advisory, the SSC has clarified that if any candidate or exam personnel is found tampering with the computer system without authorization, action will be taken against them in accordance with the relevant written rules. This action will be based on the rules applicable to the specific examination and the provisions outlined in the relevant examination notice. The Commission has instructed candidates and exam personnel to refrain from unnecessary tampering with computer systems and equipment related to the examination.
