New Pay Slip & Work Roster from November 21? What the New Labour Codes Mean for Employees
India’s four new Labour Codes came into effect on 21 November 2025, bringing a major overhaul in salary structure and working hours. A total of 29 older labour laws have now been merged into a unified framework covering Wages, Industrial Relations, Social Security, and Workplace Safety.
The biggest impact for employees will be visible in two areas:
1️⃣ How salaries will be structured
2️⃣ How working hours will be scheduled
Let’s understand what changes you can expect in your new pay slip and roster.
🔹 Major Salary Changes
The Code on Wages introduces a uniform definition of wages for the first time. Employers will no longer be able to keep the basic salary portion lower just to reduce PF and gratuity contributions.
1️⃣ Basic Pay must be at least 50% of CTC
Wages = Basic + Dearness Allowance + Retaining Allowance
If wages are less than half of your CTC, companies will have to restructure salaries.
Impact on employees:
-
Higher PF contribution (employer + employee)
-
Higher gratuity payout
-
If the CTC doesn’t increase, take-home salary may slightly reduce
2️⃣ Faster gratuity for fixed-term employees
Earlier, gratuity required 5 years of service.
Now, just 1 year is enough under fixed-term employment.
This is a major benefit in sectors with frequent job changes such as IT, media, logistics, and manufacturing.
3️⃣ Minimum Wages coverage for all sectors
Every worker—whether in retail, construction, small factories or services—will now get minimum wages protection.
A National Floor Wage will be set, which states cannot go below.
4️⃣ Timely salary is now mandatory for every worker
If a company delays salary, it may face penalties. This strengthens job security and ensures financial discipline.
🔹 Working Hours: New Flexibility, Same Limits
The weekly limit remains 48 hours, but how this is spread can vary:
| Work Format | Working Hours |
|---|---|
| 4-day week | 12 hrs/day |
| 5-day week | ~9.5 hrs/day |
| 6-day week | 8 hrs/day |
A 4-day work week is possible, but not guaranteed. It depends on both your employer and state government notifications.
Overtime Rules
-
Overtime remains double pay
-
Earlier limit – 75 hours per quarter
-
Now, state governments will decide the limit, allowing more flexibility
This may mean:
✔ More earning opportunities
✘ Risk of longer normal shifts if not regulated carefully
🔸 Two Less-Discussed but Important Changes
1️⃣ Certain commuting accidents may now qualify as workplace accidents, enabling ESI benefits.
2️⃣ ESIC coverage can now expand nationwide, even to smaller or high-risk units where eligible.
📝 What Employees Should Do Now
✔ Check your salary breakup — Is basic pay at least 50% of CTC?
✔ Discuss updated PF & gratuity deductions with HR
✔ Ensure you have a formal appointment letter — now mandatory
✔ Stay updated on your state’s OT and weekly roster rules
These labour codes aim to make India’s labour market simpler, fairer, and more transparent. However, the real impact will depend on how effectively states and employers implement these rules.
