NCERT has released the new Class 8 Social Science textbook. Significant changes have been made to the chapter on the judiciary. Find out which topics have been removed and what new material students will study.
If you or a student in your household is studying in Class 8, this news is important for you. NCERT has released the new Class 8 Social Science textbook. Several major changes have been made to the judiciary chapter this time. Some old topics have been removed and new subjects added so that students can understand the judicial system more easily.
A controversy arose a few months ago regarding certain sections related to the judiciary in the previously released Social Science textbook. Subsequently, the Supreme Court heard the matter. NCERT informed the Court that changes would be made to the book. Now, following the Court’s directives, the new book has been released and will replace the old one in the curriculum.
What has been added to the judiciary chapter?
The entire chapter on the judiciary has been rewritten in the new book. It now includes topics such as the role of the Supreme Court, Public Interest Litigation (PIL), tribunals, and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). It also explains how ordinary citizens can approach the courts when the need arises.
Several old topics removed
Sections dealing with corruption in the judiciary, the backlog of cases in courts, the shortage of judges, and challenges facing the judicial system have been removed from the new book. Additionally, references to certain high-profile Supreme Court judgments are no longer included. The introductory questions for the chapter have also been revised.
PIL explained in simple language
Special emphasis has been placed on Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the new book. Students are taught that a petition can be filed in court if a matter concerns the public interest. Examples of famous cases are provided to explain this concept, making it easier for students to grasp the subject.
Expert Committee Prepares New Book
NCERT stated that these changes were made following the recommendations of the Ministry of Education’s expert committee and directives from the Supreme Court. The entire chapter on the judiciary has been rewritten. The next hearing on this matter is scheduled for July 14, 2026, in the Supreme Court.
NCERT has been continuously developing new textbooks in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP 2020). Several new books for classes 1 through 9 have already been released. This new Class 8 Social Science textbook is also part of that same process. NCERT says the new book has been prepared using simple language so that students can better understand the Constitution and the judicial system alongside their studies.
