New LPG Cylinder Rule: A crucial update has been issued for consumers using subsidized domestic LPG cylinders. According to guidelines from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Biometric Aadhaar Authentication (BAA) will become mandatory for booking subsidized LPG cylinders starting October 1, 2026. Customers who fail to complete this biometric verification may have to pay more for their LPG cylinders.

What rules are changing from October 1, 2026?

Under the new rules taking effect on October 1, 2026, completing Biometric Aadhaar verification is essential if you wish to book an LPG refill at the controlled retail selling price inclusive of the applicable subsidy. Customers who have already completed their Biometric Aadhaar Authentication (BAA) do not need to take any further action.

Their cylinder bookings and subsidy delivery will continue smoothly, just as before. Statistics indicate that approximately 89.9% of consumers in the country—roughly 27.43 crore people—have already completed this authentication. However, verification is still pending for about 2.47 crore consumers.

3 Easy Ways to Complete Biometric Aadhaar Authentication

The government and oil marketing companies have provided several options to simplify this process, ensuring that no eligible household faces inconvenience. Consumers can complete their authentication using the following three key methods:

1 - At the time of delivery: When the delivery person arrives at your home to deliver the LPG cylinder, you can complete your biometric verification right there using their mobile app. 2 - By visiting the gas agency: You can also easily complete this biometric process by visiting the showroom of your respective LPG distributor (gas agency).

3 - From the comfort of your home via mobile app: Consumers can also complete the authentication from home using the official mobile apps of their respective oil companies:

What happens if authentication is not completed?

The Ministry of Petroleum has clarified that if a consumer fails to complete the biometric Aadhaar authentication by October 1, their LPG connection will not be stopped or cancelled. However, the subsidy benefit associated with the unverified connection will be withheld. Such consumers may have to purchase LPG cylinders at the market rate—i.e., the full non-subsidized price—when booking a refill.

Why has the government made biometric verification mandatory?

The primary objective behind implementing biometric Aadhaar authentication is to ensure that the LPG subsidy provided by the government reaches only genuine and needy families.
