The Nepalese government has taken a big step by cracking down on social media platforms in the country. The government has ordered the blocking of a total of 26 social media websites, including Facebook, YouTube, and X (formerly Twitter). This action has been taken against those companies that had not registered under the government rules.

Allegations of spreading hatred on social media platforms
The government says that users associated with fake IDs were using these platforms to spread hatred, spread rumors, and commit cyber crimes. This was increasing unrest and anti-social activities in society.

Gajendra Thakur, spokesperson of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Nepal, told news agency ANI that the ministry had given a deadline to all social media companies to register in Nepal. However, many companies failed to comply with this rule.

Crackdown on 26 social media platforms
He further said, "It has been decided in the meeting held this afternoon that the Nepal Telecommunication Authority should be ordered to block 26 social media platforms with immediate effect."

After this decision, internet users in Nepal are unable to access major platforms like Facebook, YouTube and X. The government believes that this step will curb cyber crimes and maintain peace and harmony in the society.
