The Supreme Court has approved the National Board of Examinations (NBE) to extend the deadline for conducting the NEET PG (Postgraduate) exam. This exam was earlier scheduled to be held on 15 June this year but now it will be held on 3 August.

The NEET PG exam to be held on 15 June will now be held on 3 August 2025. The Supreme Court has approved the National Board of Examinations (NBE) to extend the deadline for conducting the NEET PG (Postgraduate) exam. This exam was earlier scheduled to be held on 15 June this year in two shifts. But it was postponed after the Supreme Court directed to conduct the exam in a single shift. The Supreme Court had said in its order on May 30, 2025 that conducting the examination in two shifts is "arbitrary" and "unfair", as there may be a difference in the level of difficulty of the question papers in different shifts. The court had directed NBEMS to conduct the examination in a single shift and arrange for a sufficient number of secure examination centers to ensure transparency.

The paper will be held on August 3 from 9 am to 12:30 pm

NBEMS said in its petition filed in the Supreme Court that conducting the examination in a single shift would require additional examination centers, invigilators, security personnel and technical arrangements. For this, NBEMS, along with its technical partner Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), had proposed the date of conducting the examination on August 3. The court on Thursday accepted this proposal of NBEMS and approved the conduct of the examination in a single shift from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm on August 3.

What the court said on this matter

2,42,678 candidates have applied for NEET PG 2025 this year. Earlier this exam was to be held in two shifts at 900 centers. However, while hearing the petition of United Doctors Front (UDF), the Supreme Court rejected the arrangement of two shifts. The court said that the difficulty level of two different question papers cannot be the same, which can create inequality among the candidates. The Supreme Court also mentioned that NBEMS has charged Rs 3,500 from each general category candidate and Rs 2,500 from SC/ST/Divyang candidates as examination fee, due to which they have sufficient funds. The court said that this money can be used to arrange additional examination centers so that the examination can be conducted smoothly in a single shift.

Why this exam had to be postponed

NBEMS told the Supreme Court that more than 1,000 centers and 60,000 personnel would be required to conduct the exam in a single shift. Apart from this, strict security arrangements and cooperation of law enforcement agencies would be needed to prevent malpractice. NBEMS said that it was not possible to complete these arrangements by June 15, due to which the exam had to be postponed.

Advice for candidates

NBEMS has advised the candidates to continue their preparation and keep an eye on the official website natboard.edu.in for updates. The new exam date as well as the dates of city intimation slip and admit card will be announced soon. Candidates will be provided information about the exam centers at least two weeks in advance and admit cards four days before the exam, so that they can make travel and other arrangements.
