Most educated people live in the state of India. Who is number 1 in literacy?

Now, many states of India have reached almost 100 percent literacy level. Himachal Pradesh has taken a big leap and declared itself as the fourth fully literate state of the country.
Education is always considered the key to development in India. But do you know which state of the country is the most educated? According to the latest reports, Himachal Pradesh has won this big title. The state has not only made a great record in literacy, but has also become the first state in the country whose literacy rate has now reached 99.3 percent.
Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu will declare Himachal as a fully literate state during the “Ullhas Mela” organized at Peterhof in Shimla on the occasion of International Literacy Day on September 8. This moment will be a matter of pride for every citizen of the state. Himachal has created a new history by crossing the standard of 95 percent literacy set by the Central Government.
What do the figures say?
According to the report of the Education Department, at present the estimated population of Himachal is about 75.05 lakh. Out of these, only 56,960 people are left illiterate. The government is running a special campaign to make these people literate as well.
They have also achieved this feat
Before Himachal, some other states of the country and a union territory have also achieved this great feat. Mizoram got the distinction of becoming India's first fully literate state on 20 May 2025. According to the 2023-24 report, the literacy rate here is 98.2%, whereas in the 2011 census it was only 91.33%. After this, Goa increased its literacy rate from 94% to 100% with the help of education and training programs through the ULLAS (Understanding of Lifelong Learning for All in Society) initiative.
Tripura also showed miracles in the field of education, where the literacy rate was only 20.24% in 1961 and now it has reached 95.6%. Himachal Pradesh achieved the title of becoming the fourth fully literate state with a literacy rate of 99.3%. Programs like “Padhna-Likhna Abhiyan” and “Sakshar Bharat Mission” contributed significantly here. At the same time, Ladakh is the first union territory of the country to achieve this position with a literacy rate of 97%.
