Our thinking is that more job opportunities are in big metros like Mumbai and Bangalore, but now things are slowly changing. Now, more appointments are happening in small cities than in big cities.

Generally people in the country turn to big cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi for employment, but now the situation is slowly changing. Small cities like Udaipur, Visakhapatnam, Warangal, Lucknow and Indore are emerging as hubs of job creation. This change has happened in the last few years. Now people's thinking has started changing regarding the fact that employment opportunities are limited only to metros.

More opportunities are available in small cities

The economy of the country is changing. Technology is being adopted in every sector. The situation is such that now more employment opportunities are coming from small cities and towns. According to a report by ET, in the first half of 2025, small cities from Udaipur to Visakhapatnam and Coimbatore to Nagpur performed better than big cities in terms of recruitment in the software and IT sector compared to the last one year. According to a report by Teamlease, during January to June, more than 50 percent of the appointments were made in tier-II and tier-III cities. Whereas in tier-1 cities like Bengaluru, there was an increase of only 12-15 percent.

Small cities also came ahead in the IT sector

Talking to ET, Teamlease Digital Chief Executive Neeti Sharma said, "In the year 2025, there was a big change in the IT sector of the country. People got more jobs in this sector in tier-2 and tier-3 cities." This change has happened in a few years, especially after the Corona epidemic. In cities like Coimbatore, Nagpur and Nashik, 20-25 percent people got jobs so far this year as compared to last year. In Indore and Jaipur, 30-40 percent people were hired in the IT field. According to TeamLease data, recruitment in support functions was 24-31 percent in tier-II and tier-III cities, while 8-15 percent was recorded in tier-I cities.

Companies turning to smaller cities

One thing is clear from this that in the last few years, there has been a tremendous boom in BFSI, manufacturing, retail and IT sectors in small cities. According to a report by Randstad Talent Insights Report 2025, job opportunities in tier-II cities have increased by about 42 percent, while in tier-1 cities there has been an increase of only 19 percent. Consumption is also increasing rapidly in small cities, infrastructure is developing, education is improving. In such a situation, many companies are moving to these cities keeping in mind the low cost. As a result, more and more opportunities to work are being found here too.
