Money Transfer: If you accidentally transfer money to someone else's account during an online transaction, there is no need to panic; the government can assist you. Here’s how.

Money Transferred to Wrong Account: With the rising use of online banking and UPI, people often make mistakes in haste. They may send money to the wrong account and then worry about it. However, there is no need to panic in such situations. Taking the right steps promptly increases the chances of recovering the funds. It is not just us saying this; the government also provides full support in such cases. Let us explain how.

What to do if money is transferred to the wrong account?

If you accidentally transfer money to another person's account, do not panic; instead, take a few necessary steps, such as:

  • First, contact your bank's customer care or visit the nearest branch. Provide details such as the transaction ID, date, time, and amount.
  • If the payment was made via UPI, use the 'Raise Complaint' or 'Report an Issue' option within the respective app.
  • Keep the receipt and a screenshot of the transaction handy, as they will be useful when filing a complaint.
  • Inform the bank about the account to which the money was transferred so they can contact the concerned bank.
  • If the issue involves a UPI transaction and the bank does not provide a resolution, you can utilize the digital payment system's grievance redressal mechanism.
  • If you suspect fraud or believe the money was lost due to a scam, immediately file a complaint with the National Cyber Helpline at 1930.
  • If the bank fails to provide a resolution within the stipulated time, you can escalate the matter by filing a complaint with the RBI.

Full support from banks and the government

If the transferred money has gone to a legitimate account by mistake, the bank can contact the account holder on your behalf. However, the bank cannot directly withdraw the money from that account without the account holder's consent. Therefore, the sooner you file a complaint, the greater the chances of a resolution. Transfer Funds Carefully

Try to avoid situations where such measures become necessary. Whenever you need to send money, make sure to verify the account number, IFSC, and UPI ID at least once. A little caution can save you from major financial trouble.
