Money to be deducted from SBI account holders' pockets; rules changed, and benefits on salary accounts reduced..
If you hold a savings or salary account with the State Bank of India (SBI), you will face additional costs starting October 1, 2026. The bank is set to implement rule changes affecting its customers from next month (October 1), resulting in higher charges for cash withdrawals for both savings and salary account holders. The bank has provided details regarding these changes on its website.
**Changes to Cash Withdrawal Rules**
SBI has announced that new charges for cash withdrawals from Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) accounts opened at bank branches will come into effect on October 1, 2026. BSBD account holders will be allowed four free cash withdrawals per month. However, any transaction beyond this limit—specifically the fifth transaction—will incur a charge; a fee of ₹15 plus applicable GST will be levied for ATM withdrawals. Customers will now need to keep track of the number of transactions they perform at ATMs.
**Charges on Salary Accounts**
While transactions and ATM cash withdrawals are typically free for salary accounts, SBI is preparing to revise the rules for these accounts as well. According to the bank, plans are underway to halve the monthly limit for free transactions. Starting October 1, 2026, the limit for transactions using a debit card at other banks' ATMs and Automated Deposit and Withdrawal Machines (ADWMs) for SBI salary account holders will be reduced to five per month, down from the previous limit of ten.
**Charges on Non-Financial Transactions**
The limit for ATM cash withdrawals for SBI salary accounts has been reduced. Notably, the limit of five free transactions at other banks' ATMs encompasses both financial and non-financial transactions. The bank has clarified that this applies not only to cash withdrawals but also to non-financial services such as checking account balances or obtaining mini-statements at ATMs. It states that after the free limit is exhausted—specifically for the sixth transaction in a month—a charge of ₹23 plus GST will apply to cash withdrawals. Meanwhile, for non-financial transactions, a charge of ₹11 plus GST will be levied after the free limit is exceeded.
