Investing in the stock market has become significantly easier than before. One can open a demat account via mobile in just a few minutes and invest in shares, mutual funds, or other instruments. However, easy access to investment opportunities does not guarantee that every decision will be correct. Many first-time investors, in particular, begin investing or trading without adequate knowledge. Consequently, they may face losses instead of gains.

According to Shauryam Gupta, CEO of Rupeezy, the number of new investors in the market has surged, but financial literacy has not kept pace. Habits such as being lured by the massive profits showcased on social media, the desire for quick money, and trading without understanding the risks can spell trouble for new investors. He has highlighted four major mistakes that new investors should avoid.

**Engaging in F&O and Intraday Trading Without Understanding Them**
Many new investors view the stock market as a quick way to make money. They dive straight into Futures & Options (F&O) or intraday trading without grasping the fundamental difference between investing and trading.

In the pursuit of quick, substantial profits, investors may take risks that exceed their capacity. Losses can escalate rapidly, especially in F&O trading. Therefore, it is crucial to consider one's risk appetite and market understanding right from the start.

**Investing Based on Social Media Tips**
Social media is currently flooded with stock market advice. Seeing screenshots of someone else's profits often prompts new investors to put their money into the same stocks.
However, a profit made by someone else does not guarantee a profit for you. It is essential to conduct your own research before investing based on any "hot stock" tip found on Telegram, Instagram, or YouTube.

**Ignoring Risk Due to the Greed for High Returns**
According to a Mint report, focusing solely on maximizing profits while investing can lead to losses. Without a clear investment goal, individuals tend to make market decisions based on emotions. FOMO—the fear of missing out while watching others make profits—can compel investors to invest hastily. Therefore, before investing, it is crucial to determine the investment goal and the level of risk one can tolerate.

**Pouring more money into a losing position**
Many investors keep investing in a falling stock instead of cutting their losses. They believe the stock will eventually bounce back and recover previous losses. Often, this mindset only leads to greater losses.

In trading, it is essential to decide beforehand at what point a position should be closed to limit losses; a 'stop-loss' order helps achieve this. Attempting to immediately recover losses by entering another trade can also be dangerous.

**Investing without understanding the overall portfolio**
Many new investors put money into various stocks, mutual funds, and other investment options without tracking the total allocation or concentration of their capital. Often, despite investing in different funds, the money ends up concentrated in a single sector or a few select companies. This can increase portfolio risk. Therefore, before investing, it is vital to review where your money is allocated and ensure there is no over-reliance on any single sector or stock. This allows for a better-balanced investment portfolio.

It is worth noting that a large number of new investors are entering the market from smaller cities and towns. According to data from Rupeegy, approximately four out of five of its clients hail from outside major metropolitan areas. A significant number of these individuals are first-time investors or traders. While these investors often show initial interest in mutual funds, some later gravitate toward higher-risk options. Consequently, after opening a demat account, the most important step for an investor is to understand the risks, goals, and investment horizon before committing funds.
