Sometimes, passengers miss their train due to a sudden platform change. There's no need to panic. The Railways have implemented a ticket deposit receipt for refunds in such situations.

While traveling by train, it's often the case that a passenger arrives at the station on time, has a confirmed ticket, but misses the train due to a platform change or delayed information. People often assume the ticket is now void and no refund is available. According to railway rules, passengers can receive a full refund in such cases. However, the fault must be the railway's, and you must know the correct procedure for a refund. Let's explain under what circumstances you can receive a refund if you miss your train due to a sudden platform change, and what the railway rules say about it.

If you miss your train after arriving on time, do you get a refund?

According to Indian Railways, if a passenger arrives at the platform at 4:55 a.m. for a train scheduled to depart at 5 a.m., they are considered on time. If the train leaves before its scheduled time or is suddenly diverted to a different platform without prior notice, it is considered the railway's fault. In such cases, passengers are entitled to compensation or a full refund of their ticket by filing a complaint.

When is a refund or compensation available from the railways?

If a train leaves the platform before its scheduled time, even though the passenger has reached the station on time, the passenger is given a refund or compensation.

If a train is booked online but does not receive a notification via SMS or email about a train reschedule change, the passenger is also eligible for a refund.

If a train is suddenly diverted to a different platform without any announcement, and the passenger is unable to catch the train due to a lack of information, the passenger is also entitled to a refund or compensation.

In such cases, passengers can file a complaint by visiting railmadad.indianrailways.gov.in or calling the 139 helpline.

Refund Process After Missing a Train

Sometimes, passengers who miss a train due to a sudden platform change may throw away their tickets in anger. However, this should be avoided. The Railways has introduced a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) system for refunds in such situations. This allows passengers to indicate that they did not travel and wish to receive a refund. Passengers with online bookings can file a TDR through the IRCTC website or app via My Bookings. Passengers with counter tickets can visit the station reservation office and fill out the TDR form. Refunds in such cases are typically processed within 7 to 21 days, although in some cases, they may receive a refund within three to four days.
