Minimum Balance Charges: Many people find that money is suddenly deducted from their bank accounts. Upon checking the statement, they discover the amount was debited as 'minimum balance charges.' If this has happened to you, first understand the rule under which the bank deducted the money.

Minimum balance rules can vary by account type. Therefore, first check your account's terms and conditions and the bank's applicable charge structure.

Understanding how the deduction amount is calculated

Suppose your account requires a minimum balance of ₹10,000. If your average monthly balance was ₹7,000, there is a shortfall of ₹3,000.

If the bank's rules stipulate a charge of ₹150 for this shortfall, then ₹150 may be deducted. However, the bank cannot deduct an arbitrary amount. According to RBI guidelines, the minimum balance charge must be proportionate to the shortfall.

The bank must provide prior notification.

If your balance falls below the required limit, the bank should inform you. This notification can be sent via SMS, email, or other channels.

RBI guidelines state that the customer must be given a notice period of at least one month. A penalty charge for failing to maintain the minimum balance can only be levied after this period.

What to do if money is deducted without notice?

Suppose a minimum balance of ₹8,000 was required, and the bank deducted ₹500 without giving you any prior notice.

In such a situation, ask the bank in writing under which rule the money was deducted. Also, ask when you were notified about the low balance. Request the bank's 'Schedule of Charges' to understand the specific charges applicable to your account.

What if the account balance goes into the negative?

A savings account balance should not turn negative solely due to minimum balance charges. The RBI has issued clear directives regarding this.

For example, if an account has ₹100 and the bank deducts ₹300 for minimum balance charges... Your account balance should not drop to -₹200 solely due to this charge.

How do you claim a refund?

If you believe the bank has levied an incorrect or excessive charge, first lodge a complaint with the bank. You can do this via the app, website, email, or by visiting a branch.

Ensure your complaint includes three key details: the amount deducted, the date of the deduction, and the name or description of the charge. Also, ask the bank for a detailed breakdown and the basis for the charge.

For instance, suppose the bank deducted ₹800, but according to its rules, the applicable charge is only ₹200. In such a case, you can demand a refund of ₹600.

Escalating the complaint to the RBI

It is mandatory to complain to the bank first. If the issue is not resolved within 30 days, or if you are dissatisfied with the response, you can utilize the RBI's grievance redressal mechanism.

Therefore, keep a record of the bank's complaint reference number, your account statement, and the bank's response; these documents will be useful for any further complaints.

No minimum balance requirement for BSBDA accounts

If you hold a Basic Savings Bank Deposit Account (BSBDA), there is no requirement to maintain a minimum balance. Consequently, if money has been deducted from such an account on the grounds of a minimum balance shortfall, you should definitely ask the bank for the reason.

In other words, simply depositing funds to cover the deduction is not the only solution. First, verify whether the charge is valid. If the charge was not levied in accordance with the rules, you have the option to claim a refund from the bank.
