A large number of such people live in the country. They are not very financially capable. These poor and needy people cannot even get two meals a day. In such circumstances, the Government of India provides them with free rations under the National Food Security Act.
Having a ration card is mandatory to receive free and subsidised rations in the country. Recently, there have been reports of large-scale removal of names from ration cards. The government wants to remove from the system those who are not eligible but were still enjoying the benefits of the cards.
Investigations in many places revealed that rations were being taken in the names of deceased individuals for years. To prevent this, verification has been intensified, and ineligible cards are being continuously deleted. In the past few months, the government has removed 2.25 crore names from the free ration scheme.
This action has been taken against those who did not meet the eligibility criteria. Ministry officials say that benefits should only reach the right people. Therefore, records are being re-examined in every state to ensure that only the truly needy remain in the system.
The investigation revealed that many people obtained ration cards solely to benefit from government schemes. Some had not collected rations for six months. Therefore, the government is preparing to remove such families from the PDS list.
If you think your name may have been removed from the list, it's easy to check. Go to nfsa.gov.in. Select the Ration Card option. Then click on Ration Card Details On State Portals. Select your state, district, block, and panchayat. Then, select your ration shop and card type.
A list will open. If your name is present, your card is active. If not, your name has been removed. It's also important to remember that e-KYC is now mandatory. Cards that don't have their e-KYC updated will be the first to be deactivated.
