Microphone Permission: Find out which apps on your phone are using the microphone. Here is an easy way to check microphone permissions on Android and iPhone.

Microphone permission: Nowadays, almost every app asks for microphone permission—whether it’s WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, or a game. Often, we tap ‘Allow’ without giving it much thought. Later, we might not even remember which apps we granted access to. If you have many apps on your phone, it is a good idea to check which ones have access to your microphone.

The good news is that checking this is very easy on both Android and iPhone. In just a few seconds, you can see which apps have microphone permission. If you spot an app that doesn’t need it, you can revoke that permission immediately.

Why is it important to check this?

Your phone’s microphone is used to record your voice. It is needed for making calls, recording videos, sending voice messages, and participating in online meetings. However, if an app you don’t use has access to the microphone, it is best to turn it off. This enhances both your phone’s security and the safety of your personal information.

How to check on an Android phone:

If you use an Android phone, open Settings first. Then, go to Privacy or Security & Privacy. Here, you will find the Permission Manager or App Permissions option. Tap on it and select Microphone. You will then see a list of all apps that have permission to use the microphone. If you find an app that doesn’t need this access, tap on it and select ‘Don’t Allow’ or ‘Deny’.

Keep in mind that the names of these settings may vary slightly on phones from brands like Samsung, Vivo, Oppo, and Xiaomi, but the process remains largely the same.

How iPhone users can check:

If you have an iPhone, go to Settings. Next, tap on Privacy & Security and then open Microphone. Here, you will see a list of all apps that have permission to use the microphone. If an app does not need this access, simply toggle off the switch next to it; the app will then be unable to use the microphone.

How do you know if the microphone is currently in use?

If an app on your phone is using the microphone, the phone itself alerts you. On Android phones, you might see a green dot or a microphone icon at the top of the screen. On iPhones, a small orange dot appears at the top. If you see this indicator when you are not on a call or recording audio, be sure to check which app is currently open.
