Meta Update: Mark Zuckerberg shuts down fact check program, launches community note system..
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday announced major changes to the company's moderation policies and procedures. He said that these steps are being taken with the intention of promoting free speech and the changing political and social landscape. Zuckerberg said that Meta will now end the fact-checking program running with its trusted partners and will replace it with a community-driven system like "X" (formerly Twitter)'s Community Notes.
New policies for political content
The company has decided to change its content moderation policies on political topics. Under this, those changes will be reversed, under which the amount of political content in the user feed was reduced. These changes will apply to Threads as well as giant platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
Zuckerberg's focus: "Free speech"
Zuckerberg said in a video, "We will return to our roots and focus on reducing mistakes, simplifying our policies, and restoring free expression on our platforms." He further said, "First of all, we will remove fact-checkers and replace them with the 'Community Notes' system in the US."
Impact of elections
Zuckerberg cited the upcoming elections as a major reason for this decision. He accused governments and traditional media of trying to "promote more and more censorship." He said, "Recent elections have indicated that once again free speech should be given priority."
Changes in the content moderation system
Zuckerberg admitted that a lot of mistakes were happening in his moderation system. He said in the video, "We created very complex systems to moderate content, but the problem is that complex systems make mistakes. If these systems censor just 1% of posts by mistake, it affects millions of people. The company's moderation policy will remain strict on serious issues like drugs, terrorism, and child abuse."
