This report clearly demonstrates that the landscape of job-promoting degrees in India is changing. The MBA, which held the top spot for many years, has now slipped back. Its place has been taken by a different field.

If young people today are asked which degree is considered the best for a good job, most people immediately respond with an MBA. For years, it has been believed that an MBA opens up career paths, offers better salaries, and greater job prospects. But this year's India Skills Report 2026 has surprised everyone.

This report clearly demonstrates that the landscape of job-promoting degrees in India is changing. The MBA, which held the top spot for many years, has now slipped back. Its place has been taken by a different field: computer science and IT. This report was jointly released by leading organisations like ETS (Educational Testing Service), CII, AICTE, Association of Indian Universities, and Taggd. This further enhances the report's credibility.

Rapidly Growing New Employment Opportunities in India

The report highlights that job opportunities for youth in India are steadily increasing, especially in sectors directly related to technology and digital skills. Today, significant investments are being made in areas such as AI, cloud computing, cybersecurity, data analytics, and digital technology. Companies desire employees who understand new technologies and can keep themselves updated with changing times.

Why has the demand for computer science and IT graduates increased?

According to the report, the highest number of jobs are being offered to young people with computer science and IT expertise. This is due to the rapidly increasing use of AI and automation in companies, the expansion of digital platforms, the growing need for data, and the emphasis on strengthening cybersecurity. Companies want young people who are good not only at coding but also at engineering and data handling, meaning that in today's world, those with technical and analytical skills are in the highest demand.

Which sector offers the most jobs?

The IT sector offers the most jobs. According to the report, 35 percent of freshers are finding jobs in the IT sector. This data shows that technology-related careers in India will remain strong for many years to come.

This report has dealt the biggest blow to MBA graduates. While last year the employment percentage of MBAs was 78 percent, this year it has dropped to 72.76 percent, meaning the demand for MBAs has decreased. Companies now prioritize technology and analytical skills, not just management.

Big Opportunity for Commerce Graduates

The report also highlights that commerce is no longer just a general degree, but a strong job option. The demand for young people in business analytics, finance, and operations management is steadily increasing. The report revealed a very interesting trend. ITI graduates have an employment rate of 45.95 percent.

Those with polytechnic diplomas have an employment rate of 32.92 percent. This means that job opportunities are now opening up not only for those with higher degrees but also for those with skill-based education.
