If you use digital banking, UPI, or a crypto wallet, then this news is very important for you. Cyber security experts have identified a new dangerous malware 'Coyote', which can steal your confidential financial information by taking advantage of a special feature of Windows. A reputed cybersecurity firm named Akamai has issued a warning about this threat.

How does Coyote work?

This malware abuses Windows' "UI Automation Framework," - which was designed for users with disabilities. With the help of this feature, Coyote monitors deeply into your system and finds out which websites you are visiting, especially banking or crypto exchange sites.

Once activated, it can steal the following sensitive information:

Your username

Computer name

System configuration

And what financial services are you using

The stolen information is sent directly to a command-and-control (C2) server, where cybercriminals can easily misuse it.

What techniques does Coyote use?

Coyote is a disguised malware that targets users through different techniques:

Key-logging: Records your typing

Phishing Overlay: Steals passwords by showing fake banking websites

Squirrel Installer: Disguises itself as genuine software.

GetForegroundWindow API: Determines whether you are on a banking site or not by looking at the active window.

Brazil is currently the target, and India is also not out of danger.

Coyote is currently most active in Brazil, but experts say that this is a common strategy of cyber attackers - first test in one country, then attack globally. Countries like India, where digital banking is growing rapidly, could become its next target in the coming time.

How to protect yourself?

1. Keep the system updated: Every software update includes security improvements. Keep your computer, browser, and apps on the latest version.

2. Install a reliable antivirus: A competent and updated antivirus program can detect malware quickly.

3. Avoid suspicious links: Be cautious before clicking on any unknown email, website or pop-up link.

4. Enable two-factor authentication: Enable two-step verification on your banking and wallet accounts to add another layer of security.

Vigilance is safety

To avoid malware like Coyote, you need to stay one step ahead of technology. A little awareness, strong security measures and constant updates can protect you from major cyber threats. Remember — your information is your most valuable asset in the digital world.
