LPG e-KYC Update: The government has clarified that LPG e-KYC is not a new rule but rather a data rectification process; it is mandatory only for those consumers who have not yet completed their e-KYC.

LPG Gas Subsidy Scheme India: The government has cleared up misconceptions regarding the biometric Aadhaar-based e-KYC for LPG consumers. In a social media post, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas stated that this is not a new rule but part of ongoing government efforts aimed specifically at making LPG consumer data accurate and transparent.

According to the new regulations, the e-KYC requirement does not apply uniformly to all LPG customers; it is mandatory only for those who have not yet completed the process.

Which customers need to complete e-KYC?

The government stated that LPG customers who have not yet undergone biometric Aadhaar authentication (e-KYC) must complete it. This step is crucial for preventing fake connections and ensuring that subsidies reach genuine beneficiaries.

Which customers are exempt?

Customers who have already completed e-KYC do not need to do it again. The rule differs slightly for non-Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) customers: they are required to complete e-KYC only once per financial year, specifically in accordance with the prescribed refill limits (targeted DBT subsidy applies to the 8th and 9th refills after the initial 7).

Government clarification and objective

The Ministry stated that e-KYC ensures transparency in the LPG distribution system, curbs the presence of fake consumers, and ensures that subsidies reach the intended recipients. The Ministry has also clarified that completing e-KYC does not affect the supply of gas cylinders and can be done easily and free of charge from the comfort of one's home.
